Here is a list of things you need to know before buying your hula hoop -

1. Dress size matters when buying a hula hoop. If the hula hoop is too small then it will spin too fast for your body to keep up with, if it's too big it will spin far too slow and you won't benefit. Here is the general rule of thumb when choosing the right size hoop. (I have also included links to hula hoops I recommend)
  • 36" Hula Hoop - Suits women with a dress size UK 4-6 / US 1-2
  • 38" Hula Hoop - Suits women with a dress size UK 8-10 / US 4-6
  • 40" Hula Hoop - Suits women with a dress size UK 12-16 / US 8-12
  • 42" Hula Hoop - Suits women with a dress size UK 18 - 22 / US 14-18 - I have struggled to find a hula hoop to link in this size. My advice is to contact a hula hoop seller and have it custom made or to make your own hula hoop.
2. I do NOT recommend weighted hula hoops and by this I mean 2lbs or more. They have been known to cause internal and external bruising. A weighted hula hoop will limit the moves you can do if you decide to learn hoop dance or want to do arm/chest/leg hooping. Another problem with weighted hula hoops is you can't keep them spinning longer than a few minutes as you end up too sore and tired. A lighter hoop actually burns more calories as you can hoop comfortably for as long as you like!

I recommend that your hula hoop weighs between 550g and 750g, depending on the size.

3. Travel Hula Hoops - Some genius person decided to invent travel hula hoops, these are great if you are planning on hooping on the go. I personally love beach hooping and a travel hoop makes it so much easier to transport my hula hoop without looking crazy! You can get various types of travel hula hoops, some fold into a figure 8 then fold in half to make effectively a small hoop. You can also get ones that break apart and piece back together. I find them both to be good!

4. Hula Hoop Tape - Make sure when you get your first hula hoop it is wrapped with cloth tape or gaffer tape (as well as an electrical tape or holographic/sparkle tape), this will provide the best grip against your clothes and skin. It's also durable so if your hoop is being dropped a lot it won't look too beat up.

5. The Holy Grail - LED HULA HOOPS.

LEDA hula hoops aren't a necessity but they are so cool and fun I had to include them in my list! LED hoops are made up of a clear tubing which have LED lights and a battery inside them. There is usually a button which allows you to turn the lights on and off. These are great fun if you are going to a festival or want to hoop at night. Here are some of my LED hula hoop picks -
